i would posit that it's easier to obtain the nastiest hard core porn than to obtain even a cap gun. after all, if i want a cap gun i at least have to go upstairs and retrieve the package from amazon and pay the credit card bill. I can get hard core porn in less than 10 seconds right here on my laptop without even standing up.

"material technologies and methods would make this relatively inexpensive"
Marvin, I understand your point, but I think you are underestimating just how broke and how skin flint cheap the citizens in my area are. Just at the middle school, which is right behind my house, there must be 50 ground floor windows and at least 8 entry points. Even $50,000 to install safety modifications would be hard to sell, when that school can't even afford a librarian, a nurse, or a full time guidance counselor.
Too many people, especially in small towns far away from large cities, just don't believe that something like this could happen to them. After all, there are more suicides in my county than murders ( I actually heard someone say that). People here think that because everybody knows everybody else, and everybody has lived here forever, there are no people who would commit such a terrible act. I know that isn't reality, but people desparately want to feel safe. Installing bullet proof glass would mean acknowledging that they really aren't any safer here in Carmi, IL than the people who live in Chicago or New York.

Which of the 5 weekly meetings did you hate the most?
by RULES & REGULATIONS init was always stressed that the five weekly meetings were like the fingers on your hand.
each one was just as important as the next.

I hated the ministry school the most - too many presenters who could barely read.

A little update on my family
by sooner7nc ina few of you may remember that my wife had a kidney transplant early last year.
since then the kidney has been incredible, giving her a new lease on life.
it's really been good to see the light in her eyes that i had missed for quite a long time.. the counterpoint to this good news is the problems we have had with our son coltin.

Looking Back, Did You Notice Many JWs Had Drinking, Drug or Mental Issues?
by minimus inas an elder, i saw many people that were affected by booze, drugs and mental health issues.
a lot of witnesses fought depression and turned to other things when they realized they couldn't keep up the pace and find inner happiness with what they did do..

I never saw any indication of heavy drinking or use of illegal drugs, but a lot of the local dubs were on antidepressants. Odd how the happiest people on earth need Xanax and Prozac by the truckload. I remember one of the pioneer sisters telling me that she had to pop a Xanax before every meeting.

An Interesting Question for the Board...
by AGuest ini just saw this done on a tv show and was intrigued by the answers (almost unanimously yes).
"yes, but my husband is about to retire so i'm going to have to start telling him the truth!".
"ohhh, yes - if my husband knew the truth he'd need medication!".

I would never spend a significant amount of money on anything without discussing it with Just Ron. What qualifies as a significant amount varies with our income level and the type of item being purchased. I wouldn't hesitate to spend $200 on groceries without consulting him, but I would never spend that amount on a non-necessary item without consulting him first.

While I agree that making schools much harder to break into would help prevent this type of attack, I don't think it's an affordable thing to retrofit every existing building. My town has 5 school buildings, all of which have ground level windows in every classroom, and full view glass doors at most entry points. Removing and bricking up those windows and rebuilding each entry point would be hugely expensive. Given the tiny risk of such an attack - there have been how many nationwide in the last 20 years over how many individual school buildings? - I don't think you'd get the voters to approve a bond issue or a tax hike to pay for that.
I do think that all new school buildings should be designed and built to make attacks less likely to succeed. Playgrounds should be walled off too, and vehicle traffic should be routed well away from the building to prevent car bombs and outdoor attacks.
